WHAT NEW YEARS ON THE REFUGE LOOKS LIKE

I walked the Refuge a couple of days after the calendar rolled over into 2014. No parties, champagne, or confetti flying out there. But I saw what passes for a new year change you can see in the picture above. The old, dry grasses from 2013 were fully yielding to the sprouting new grasses of 2014. The dead grass deteriorates into soil amendments for the coming life cycle of 2014. It’s not spectacular but it is a reliable precedent for the life cycle to come.
