My wife and I had some business on the east side of Portland a couple of days ago. We decided, while were out there, to drive across the Columbia River to the north and visit a wildlife refuge we hadn’t seen, Stagerwald NWR. It’s right at the mouth of the Columbia Gorge on the Washington side. We hadn’t counted on the winds that come whistling down the Gorge this time of year and drop the temperature about 10 degrees. It only took us a hundred yards of walking the trail of this wide-open terrain to realize we were under-dressed. We turned back to a Starbucks to warm our hands around a worm latte.
