DON’T CALL IT POND SCUM

AZOLLA AT TUALATIN RIVER REFUGE POND, DEC ’13

A few months ago I began wondering what the red stuff floating on one of the ponds (above) at the Tualatin River Refuge was. Last autumn it covered maybe 75% of the pond. After quite a search of “aquatic plants”I discovered it must be Azolla caroliniana, a common water plant with some remarkable properties.

I’ve become a big fan of this little plant and a evangelist to get people to appreciate this overlooked life form. So I created a page about Azolla under the Plant Life menu item. Check there for some interesting information about this tiny–but powerful–plant.
